Woodhouse Square, Leeds
For Crosslane Student Developments
Woodhall was commissioned to provide design advice and prepare a Heritage Statement in connection with the construction of a 117 student studio development in Woodhouse Square, Leeds. The site was previously occupied by St. Anne’s Primary School which was demolished in c. 2006 and subsequently used as a surface car park. Immediately adjacent to the southern boundary of the site is the Grade II listed Waverley House and within the immediate surrounding area there are a number of other listed buildings.
The development was designed around a courtyard, with new blocks facing onto Woodhouse Square, Denison Road and Back Claremont Grove. The proposed building was designed in a contemporary manner but with brick walls and was three/four storeys in height with accommodation within the roof. In granting planning permission Leeds City Council considered that “the proposal would provide new housing in a manner which would enhance the character and appearance of the conservation area and the setting of nearby listed buildings.”
